Choosing the Right ASTEP Pathway for a Career in Sleep Medicine

This article provides guidance on choosing the appropriate ASTEP pathway for individuals interested in pursuing a career in sleep medicine.

Overview of ASTEP Pathways

ASTEP offers two main pathways for individuals looking to enter the field of sleep medicine:

  1. Focused Training Pathway

    • Ideal for those who are new to the field or do not currently work in a sleep facility.
    • Begins with a comprehensive Intro to Sleep Medicine course, followed by a final exam.
    • Designed to provide foundational knowledge and skills for a career in sleep technology.
  2. Clinical Experience Pathway

    • Best suited for individuals who are already employed or plan to work in a sleep facility.
    • Allows participants to gain clinical hours while completing the required modules.
    • Prepares candidates for credentialing exams while providing practical experience.

Choosing the Right Pathway

When deciding between the two pathways, consider the following:

  • Choose the Clinical Experience Pathway if:

    • You are currently working or plan to work in a sleep lab under supervision.
    • You prefer a self-paced online learning format while gaining real-world experience.
    • You are comfortable registering directly for the ASTEP modules online.
  • Choose the Focused Training Pathway if:

    • You prefer starting with a structured course led by an accredited provider.
    • You want a formal course and a final exam before progressing to the online modules.
    • You are new to sleep technology and want additional foundational preparation.

Additional Information

Both pathways require participants to complete clinical hours and do not guarantee certification; candidates must pass the certification exam (CPSGT or RPSGT) after fulfilling all requirements. It is also important to secure your own employment and clinical training site.
